Gas station equipment that is properly installed, repaired, and maintained is more reliable and effective at keeping gasoline vapors out of the air. These vapors contact toxic compounds that harm the environment and public health.

To ensure vapor recovery equipment is operating at optimum performance, gas stations owner/operators and technicians have new regulations to comply with effective September 1, 2011.

Key elements of the new gas station rules are:

  • Installers and testers are required to be certified to conduct equipment tests and do installations and repairs.  Certification is valid for two years and ensures all installers and testers are performing high-quality service so that every station is operating at optimum performance. The open-book exams for Vapor Recovery System Testing and Vapor Recovery System Installation repair are $75 each and are available online with the International Code Council at www.iccsafe.org.  Exam reference books are available with local library systems.
  • Testers are required to file online test activity reports within 48 hours of a test. Use our new, online database to enter pass/fail reports and check the maintenance history of registered stations.  Testing forms are still available for your use.
  • Owners/operators have less self-inspection requirements in exchange for more compliance testing.  Click here for the new requirements for station owners/operators.
