Up to $500 Federal Tax Credit for Energy Efficiency

The federal Energy Tax Credit expired on Dec. 31, 2011. For tax filing information, click to ENERGY STAR's web site, or check with your tax advisor.

If you purchased a qualifying energy-efficient product or renewable energy system for your home (principal residence) in 2011, you may be eligible for a federal tax credit of up to $500. Note: The tax credits were extended into 2011, but at a lower levels, with a $500 lifetime limit. If you got over $500 in these tax credits from 2006-2010, you are not eligible for anything more. Certain efficiency ratings are required.

  • Biomas Stoves (pellet or wood)
  • Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
  • Insulation
  • Roofs (metal and asphalt)
  • Water Heaters (non-solar)
  • Windows and Doors

How do I apply for the tax credit?


Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) 360-725-2857

LIHEAP provides money to help low income households make home heating more affordable, avoid shutoff of utility services during the winter, and maintain a warm, safe, and healthy environment for households with young children, the elderly, and the disabled. LIHEAP offers both energy assistance as well as weatherization services.  Click here to find the program for your city or county.


USDA Rural Housing Repair and Rehabilitation Grants

Rural Housing Repair and Rehabilitation grants are available to dwelling owner/occupant. Provides financing to qualified very low income homeowners to repair or make improvements to their homes, such as health and safety hazards, home weatherization, utility hookups, repairs to manufactured home. Puget Sound Energy (PSE) 888-225-5773

PSE provides natural gas service to parts of King (not Enumclaw), Kittitas (not Ellensburg), Lewis, Pierce (not Buckley), Snohomish, and Thurston counties.

PSE natural gas customers:

  • Heating & Energy Efficiency Rebates
  • Weatherization Assistance for Income-Eligible Customer
  • Heating systems
    • ENERGY STAR qualified boiler (95 percent AFUE): $350
    • ENERGY STAR qualified forced-air furnace: $100
    • Fireplace: $200
  • Insulation
    • Attic insulation: 50 percent of the cost, up to $400
    • Duct insulation: 50 percent of the cost, up to $200
    • Duct sealing: Free for qualifying customers
    • Floor insulation (R-0 to R-30): 50 percent of the cost, up to $400
    • Floor insulation (R-11 to R-30): 50 percent of the cost, up to $200
    • Wall insulation: 50 percent of the cost, up to $400
  • Water heating systems
    • For a limited time, CRS-referred customers who purchase and install qualifying home/water heating products, with PSE rebates ranging from $50 to $1,500, can now receive an evenly matched promotional offer of up to $500 from participating contractors.

PSE also provides electric service to all of Island, Skagit, Thurston, and Whatcom counties; parts of Jefferson, King (not Seattle), Kitsap, Kittitas, and Pierce (not Tacoma) counties.

PSE electric customers:

  • Insulation
    • Attic insulation: 50 percent of the cost, up to $400
    • Duct insulation: 50 percent of the cost, up to $200
    • Duct sealing: Free for qualifying customers
    • Floor insulation (R-0 to R-30): 50 percent of the cost, up to $400
    • Floor insulation (R-11 to R-30): 50 percent of the cost, up to $200
    • Wall insulation: 50 percent of the cost, up to $400
  • Water heating systems
    • ENERGY STAR® qualified heat pump water heater: $500
    • Storage (.94 Energy Factor or higher): $50
    • Waste-water heat recovery system: $250
    • For a limited time, CRS-referred customers who purchase and install qualifying home/water heating products, with PSE rebates ranging from $50 to $1,500, can now receive an evenly matched promotional offer of up to $500 from participating contractors.
